Titans Snatch Dramatic Victory over Bedford in Thrilling Twelve-Try Encounter
Rotherham Titans produced a finish that will live long in the memory as they dramatically snatched victory from Bedford Blues in a sensational Elior Champ Rugby encounter at Clifton Lane, winning a twelve-try thriller in the most extraordinary circumstances.
In glorious sunshine, the sides served up a brilliant advert for Champ Rugby, sharing six tries apiece in an absorbing contest that appeared destined to finish in a draw until winger Ben Cambriani produced a moment of magic to deny Bedford’s Ben Dufficy with the final kick of the match.
The drama followed what looked to be a decisive Bedford comeback, with back rower Archie Benson seemingly having broken Rotherham hearts when he dotted down close to the posts in the final play of the game. However, Cambriani had other ideas, charging down Dufficy’s conversion attempt to spark wild celebrations around Clifton Lane and secure Titans their second victory of the season.
Bedford made the early breakthrough when James Bennett crossed the whitewash, but Rotherham responded in emphatic fashion, taking control with three tries in a devastating ten-minute spell.
Full back Isaac Shaw was first to find a way through the visitors’ defence before scrum half JB Bruzulier followed suit. Centre Lloyd Hayes then completed the scoring burst as Titans capitalised on their attacking momentum to establish a commanding position.
Bedford, last season’s beaten finalists, showed their quality by refusing to buckle and reduced the deficit through Lucas Titherington. However, Rotherham finished the first half strongly, moving the ball superbly across the park to create space for Cambriani to finish spectacularly in the corner.
Hayes added an excellent conversion to send the hosts into the interval with a healthy 28-14 advantage.
There was always likely to be a reaction from a Bedford side whose credentials were well established, but Titans appeared to have delivered a potentially decisive blow just five minutes into the second half.
Lekima Ravuvu crossed for a converted try to extend Rotherham’s lead to 35-14, leaving the visitors with a mountain to climb.
Yet the Blues refused to surrender, and the momentum began to shift as the contest developed into a breathless exchange of attacking rugby.
Henry Walker crossed for Bedford before Titans winger Jackson Barling responded with a try of his own, maintaining the hosts’ advantage.
But Bedford were beginning to find another gear, increasing their intensity and putting the Rotherham defence under sustained pressure. Hooker Tommy Herman touched down before Titherington grabbed his second try of the afternoon, bringing the visitors within seven points and setting up a nervy finish.
With the home crowd growing increasingly anxious, Bedford pressed hard in the closing stages, and their determination carried them deep into injury time.
The Blues continued to hammer away at the Titans line, and in the fourth minute of added time, with the final play of the match, Benson forced his way over close to the posts to seemingly rescue a draw.
Dufficy stepped forward to take the conversion that would have levelled the scores at 40-40, but Cambriani had one final contribution to make.
Reading the situation perfectly, the Titans winger sprinted towards the kicker and threw himself into the path of the ball, charging it down to deny Bedford at the death.
Clifton Lane erupted in a mixture of shock, disbelief and unbridled joy as the final whistle confirmed an extraordinary Rotherham victory.
After a contest that swung repeatedly between the two sides, Titans had found a remarkable way to prevail, producing a finish worthy of a match that had showcased the very best of Champ Rugby.
Speaking after the game Titans Harvey Biljon reflected:
“We must give a lot of credit to Bedford; we spoke at half time about the tempo they were going to bring in the second half to try and lift it and reduce their deficit.
“We had our moments in the second half, but we’re at that in-between space where we don’t whether we should have taken more, or we’ll just savour and enjoy the victory.
“But I have to say I hope we don’t use up this luck at Clifton Lane; we’ve had two games at home that have gone into the 80-odd minute.
“But if I pause and reflect for a minute and consider the fixtures we’ve been given at the start of our campaign; with us being thrown in against the finalist, the semi-finalists and the champions; for Rotherham to come away with the points we have I’m tremendously proud of the hard work the players have put in.
“We just need to make sure now we build on it; we know how tough it was to go back-to-back after the Coventry game and then into the cauldron of Worcester, so we’ve got to make sure we can step-up again week against Caldy in what is a short turnaround going into a Friday night game here at Clifton Lane.”
