Titans Produce Stunning Comeback to Mark Champ Return with Dramatic Coventry Victory

Rotherham Titans marked their long-awaited return to Champ Rugby in sensational fashion as they produced a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat Coventry 38-35 at Clifton Lane.

On a bright, sunny afternoon in South Yorkshire, the Titans looked down and out at half-time as the fully professional visitors deservedly headed into the interval with a commanding 28-12 advantage.

Yet, in a game packed with twists and turns, Rotherham refused to surrender and produced a magnificent second-half fightback before centre Mitchell Lacey-Babalola raced over two minutes from time to put the hosts ahead for the first time.

What followed was an agonising finale as Coventry laid siege to the Titans line deep into injury time and appeared to have snatched victory with the final play, only for the officials to rule that the visitors had infringed in the build-up.

Moments later, referee Anthony Woodthorpe blew the final whistle and Clifton Lane erupted as players, coaches and supporters celebrated a spectacular victory on the Titans’ return to the second tier after an eight-year absence.

The opening half had belonged largely to Coventry, who immediately demonstrated why their fully professional outfit would provide such a stern test.

Former dual-registered Titan Tom Bacon opened the scoring for the visitors before Rotherham responded through winger Ben Cambriani, who squeezed over to give the home side encouragement.

Coventry scrum-half Maunder then produced a smart brace to establish a commanding advantage, with Jackson Barling crossing for Rotherham in between the two scores.

When Coventry captain Jordan Poole powered over shortly before the interval, it looked as though the visitors had established a lead that would prove insurmountable.

At 28-12 down, Rotherham faced a huge challenge.

But whatever was said in the Titans dressing room clearly had the desired effect.

They emerged for the second half with renewed intensity, ambition and belief, and within a minute Morgan Veness crashed over to reduce the deficit.

Callum Bustin then barged his way over on 54 minutes and suddenly the previously unthinkable comeback was beginning to look possible.

Coventry, however, remained determined and when fly-half Bruce Houston glided through ten minutes later, the visitors appeared to have regained control and threatened to extinguish the Titans’ hopes.

But the Clifton Lane faithful kept believing.

With the clock ticking into the closing stages, Rotherham continued to attack and their pressure finally told when Jackson Barling crossed for his second score of the afternoon with just four minutes remaining.

Suddenly there was only 4 points between the sides.

Then came the decisive moment.

Two minutes from time, centre Mitchell Lacey-Babalola raced through to score close to the posts, sending the home support into raptures and putting Rotherham ahead for the first time at 38-35.

Coventry responded by throwing everything at the Titans in a frantic finale.

Deep into injury time, the visitors laid siege to the Rotherham line and thought they had scored the decisive try with the final play.

However, the officials spotted an infringement and the score was cancelled.

Moments later, Woodthorpe blew for time.

The celebrations that followed were a fitting conclusion to an extraordinary afternoon.

Rotherham had scored seven tries to Coventry’s six and, more importantly, had demonstrated the resilience and character required to compete at Champ level.

After eight long years away, the Titans are back — and they could hardly have marked their return in more dramatic fashion.

Before leaving the field, a delighted Harvey Biljon reflected:

“I am mentally proud and beaming with pride because of the effort that those players put in. To come up against a team that’s full time and to play with the speed that they do and for us to hold on for 80 plus minutes doesn’t come by chance. It comes by effort, training those scenarios in that situation and the players thoroughly deserved their plaudits for today.

“The dressing room at half time was a very calm place, we didn’t get overly emotional and I think credit goes to the players. We had some specific messages at half time, and the players went out and delivered to that script and to have players trust you as a coach in those moments and then to go and deliver it, it’s just very rewarding.

“I think the turning point of the game was the score we got just after half time and I’d also add to that I think we were really brave with our bench, we didn’t hold out and wait for moments. We’ve got a strategy and a plan, and I think all those players that got on to the field made a real contribution and added value and when you’ve got a squad like that, it’s a good place to be.”
