During the planning for our Centenary Season, the whereabouts of the Yorkshire Regiment trophy was discussed. The Yorkshire Derby games used to be between Rotherham, Doncaster and Leeds, in the Championship days, and were always tough battles.
This season in National 2 North there are 9 Yorkshire teams, with tense Derby matches every week.
It was proposed that the Trophy be reinstated and the Royal Yorkshire Regiment were delighted to support the idea, and the new Chair of Yorkshire RFU agreed. Members of the Regiment will be supporting our first home ‘derby’ against Huddersfield at the end of the month, and Lt. Colonel O’Kelly will be joining us later on in the season.
We have approached all the Yorkshire Clubs to invite the Regiment to a derby game in the same way and so we may see them at other venues.
Last weekend saw 3 derby games resulting in the table for week 1 looking like this:
This week there are 4 derby games:
Hull v Ionians
Leeds v Otley
Sheffield Tigers v Sheffield
Wharfedale v Rotherham
