Memorable game from 2014/15 – Roth V Ulster Ravens

This game from the 2014/15 season saw Titans host Belfast based side Ulster Ravens in round 4 of the British & Irish Cup.

Having just sneaked a win over the Ravens in the last play of the game in round 3 at the Belfast Harlequins ground, Rotherham went into this one with the confidence of a home side.

That confidence was justified as an excellent performance followed with a 7-try romp in a 52-17 win, which in turn put them on the brink of qualification for the quarter finals of the competition.

Titans tries came via a Jack Preece hat-trick and one each for Robin Hislop, Michael Keating, Jamie Broadley and Tom Barrett, with the latter also adding 17 points from the tee.

Post-match coaches comments:

Lee Blackett: “We need 5 points from the next two games to secure a quarter final spot. We said at the outset we’d take this competition seriously and that’s exactly what we’ve done. What we’d like to do now is secure a home tie in the next round, but we know we have two tough games remaining and it won’t be easy.

“I was delighted with the boy’s performance today and I think in the last couple of weeks we’ve taken a step forward in our attack. I think conditions in the last two games have been different; I think in all of last season we played in just 3 games when it was raining and this year we seem to have played in 6 already.

“I think it’s been the conditions which have hampered the way we play and we’ve had to change our style at times because of that. But in the last two weeks there’s certainly been a step forward from the boys in attack.

“We showed great mentality and it was great to see a couple of the lads who hadn’t played much recently and another couple who are just returning from injury and I thought they did really well.

“On a day like today it’s hard to single out individuals as I thought everyone who got on did a good job. As for Tom Barrett, you only have to look at his record to see how good a goal-kicker he is and he showed that again today. But it wasn’t only his kicking; I thought he ran the game in attack real well too.

“The forwards deserve a mention as it wasn’t just about us in attack; I thought the pack was outstanding, particularly in the first hour and especially up front. We’ve spoken about the mauling side of the game and how we want to improve and I think we saw some improvement in that area today with a couple of great mauling tries.”
